•Self-assembled Si@Li4Ti5O12core-shell nanocomposites were realized via a facial synthesis process.•Commercial low-cost H2TiO3particle is chosen as titanium sources for pure LTO coating layer formation.•Unique Li4Ti5O12shell buffer expansion of Si core and provide stable SEI layer, excellent diffusion and conductivity.•The Si@Li4Ti5O12nanocomposite anode exhibited outstanding rate performance and excellent cycling stability.
