The advances in the design of portable powered bathlifts have made a significant change in independence for thousands of people previously denied the pleasure of a good soak because they have difficulties getting in and out of the bath. Most occupational therapists will have a working knowledge of the Mangar bathlift. Developed in 1981, it was the first portable powered bathlift and many of the early models can still be seen working today. The bellows mechanism between the base and the seat is raised and lowered by low air pressure supplied by means of a portable air compressor. This compressor can either be powered by mains or battery pack.
