Evaluation of leadership is a central task in organizational consultation. However, this evaluation too often focuses solely on the behavior of the leader and ignores other critical organizational issues. These issues include the adequacy of task definition, the relationship between task definition and administrative structure, and the availability of scarce resources. A systems approach focuses on the reciprocal impact of individual psychodynamics and organizational characteristics on leadership functioning. It is suggested that such an approach can be useful for the consultant in examining the leadership functioning.
