Seven design modifications of a standard 3-ton heat pump for a single story 1900 sq. ft. house are compared for original cost and operating cost in 5 different climates. It is concluded that significant annual energy savings can materialize from the suggested modifications to present day unitary heat pump designs, and that increased initial costs can be recovered quickly due to increased energy costs.
