One of the objectives of social work education is professionality in social work practice. Module handbooks also emphasize the development of social and emotional competencies. However, so far no real hard evidence has been produced showing that these competencies can be taught as part of formal learning settings and integrated practical placements. Using 264 validated questionnaires, the study analysed whether or not formal learning settings at universities of applied science can help develop social and emotional competencies. Hardly any statistically significant effects were detected. Since formal learning settings hardly seem to have any influence on the development of these competencies, changing these formal learning arrangements should be taken into consideration.
