Background: The term complementary medicine covers a multitude of measures that are usually offered outside conventional healthcare. A considerable proportion of patients with cancer use complementary medicine or have questions regarding this topic. Many of these patients wish to discuss the topic with their physician. Physicians however rarely have acquired knowledge and skills which are necessary to deal with requests by patients regarding complementary medicine in a professional manner. Results: In this paper we analyze clinical–ethical aspects of discussions about complementary medicine within the patient–physician relationship in oncology. The starting point for this analysis are four typical situations which give rise to discussions about complementary medicine within the patient–physician relationship. Based on our analysis we will present communication strategies to deal with the topic in a professional way.
