As civilian access to outer space continues to advance, there is growing interest and exploration in space tourism, beyond propulsion and space exploration. However, space tourism remains an exceptionally challenging domain, characterized by difficulty, high costs, and substantial risks. In response, virtual reality (VR) experiences offer an avenue for enhanced comprehension of space tourism, providing preliminary training and alternative encounters. Nevertheless, the efficacy of VR space tourism experiences as catalysts or substitutes for actual space tourism remains unproven. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the impact of VR space tourism experiences on real-space tourism. We examined whether three psychological factors known to influence the intention to engage in actual space tourism—perceived risk, perceived benefit, and self-efficacy—were positively influenced by VR space tourism experiences. Subsequently, we analyzed whether economic effects, such as VR revisit intention (or purchase intention) and the intention to participate in actual space tourism, demonstrated improvement. Additionally, we explored the impact of individuals’ pre-existing interest in space and disparities between citizens of technologically advanced and lagging space countries on the enhancement of perceived risk, perceived benefit, and self-efficacy. The findings indicated that VR space travel experiences positively influenced attitudes toward actual space tourism (perceived risk, perceived benefit, and self-efficacy), with significant moderating effects based on interest in space and national disparities in space technology. These results contribute to discussions on the utility of VR space travel experiences and provide implications for advancing the space tourism industry.
