This paper is an attempt to reconstruct O Young-Soo’s role as editor of Hyundaemunhak (The Modern Literature). In this process, this paper first discussed the history of the founding of Hyundaemunhak, focusing on the relationship between Kim Ki-Oh, president of Daehan Textbooks, and O Young-Soo. Thus, instead of the conventional approach of linking Hyundaemunhak to Munye (The Literary Arts), this study offers a new way of approaching it in the context of a longer cultural history of the cultural aspirations and cultural movements of the youth of the Eonyang region. Second, this paper focuses on the technical aspects of editing and production that O was responsible for in Hyundaemunhak. This paper discusses the task of editing and producing a manuscript, taking into account the format and visual impact of a magazine, as a task that requires a deep understanding of literature, genres, writers and readers. It was also significant as an area where O’s artistic talent and experience in visual design and book design could be utilized. Third, this paper focused on O’s attempts to communicate with readers through Hyundaemunhak. This paper discusses these attempts as a form of marketing that sought to manage and expand the readership of Hyundaemunhak in the changing marketplace of literary magazine publishing in the 1950s. In addition, this paper reevaluates O’s attempts to rethink the editorial process of a magazine as a process of communication and negotiation with readers, rather than a process of transmitting and reinforcing the literary ideology or aesthetic taste of a few editors, as a significant achievement.
