This paper aims to shed light on the types and imagery of Yangguibiga, and understand the significance of shifting from Sino-Korean Poetry to Gasa, from late Joseon Dynasty to the Japanese colonial era. There remain to date eleven pieces of Yangguibiga which can be classified into two types corresponding to Yang Guifei’s lifetime and after death. The latter describes the longing of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang after Yang Guifei’s death and his wish of alliance with him. This type faithfully follows the narrative of Sino-Korean poetry 〈Janghanga〉 and can thus be classified as "Janghanga-type". The reason why Sino-Korean Poetry 〈Janghanga〉 switched to Gasa Yangguibiga is that commoners and women emerged the primary audience of Gasa. In Yangguibga, people’s awareness was highlighted and issues such as Emperor Xuanzong of Tang"s lechery called into question; furthermore, women’s sense of purpose was strengthened by consciousness of kind for Yang Guifei as it omits the 〈Janghanga〉 half. In addition, it shows strong connection to the songs of the time by drawing on the stories of 〈Jeokbyeokga〉, 〈Chohanga〉 and 〈Chunhyangga〉. In other words, by shifting from Sino-Korean poetry to Gasa, Yangguibiga’s contents also shifted from high born men’s taste to that of commoners and women, and tended to reflect the situation of the time by emphasizing the suffering of commoners who were mobilized at war. In sum, it can be said that Yangguibiga is a work that could relate to the realities of the time, and assimilate and transform foreign literature, namely that related to Chinese history.
