The battery system which provides power to the satellite is classified as one of the most critical parts of satellites. Since a large nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) battery was installed in TELSTAR-1 during the 1960s, nickel-cadmium cells were installed in satellites up to SPOT-6 satellite launched in August 2012. For communication satellites which required high power, nickel-hydrogen (Ni-MH) batteries were selected from the early 80s to the 90s. Since the beginning of the 21st century, lithium-ion (Li-Ion) batteries were gradually used in satellites because of their various merits. Today, 90% of the recently-developed satellites are using lithium-ion batteries. This study reviews whether or not the small lithium-ion (18650 series) batteries manufactured in Korea for HEV/EV can be applied in the space environment. It also introduces the test procedures and processes for space qualification.
