Port of Hong Kong and Singapore have been top two container ports for years, twenty million TEUs of container throughput have made them the most well-known mega ‘hubs’. At the mean time, the mega carriers manage hundreds of vessels with capacity of over half millions TEUs, who also have the capacity to support a ‘hub’. The question arises ’What’s the relationship between mega carrier and mega ports? Does mega carrier utilize mega port as the ‘hub’? To answer the above question, this study collected three items of operational information of thirty-four ports of one mega carrier, to examine the role of container ports played in the shipping network. The result shown there are at least six types of hubs. The strategy of dedicated terminal has been found to be the most significant factor influencing shipping line to select the port as a hub.
