(Background and Purpose) Coffee has become a favorite food for modern people, and various brands are overflowing in countries around the world. Coffee sales have recently increased in Vietnam. Vietnam’s coffee space is expected to increase consumers’ income, and tourists have a high level of expected value for the space; therefore, it is necessary to approach it as a design space rather than simply a space for drinking coffee. The purpose of this study is to break away from the uniform cafe space design in Vietnam’s highly competitive coffee market and to propose a new cafe space design by applying visual metaphor elements as a consumption activity space. (Method) As a design method, first, the concept of visual metaphor is examined; second, the concept of a café is investigated prior to café space design, and the concept visual metaphor and its application in cafe space design are explained. In addition, based on previous research, we derived café space design components defined from a metaphorical perspective. Third, we analyzed three cafe spaces in Vietnam to conduct a case study using the derived information. Fourth, we designed a café space using the metaphor of a case space that applied the metaphorical elements analyzed previously. Fifth, the contents derived from this study are comprehensively organized, and the conclusion of the paper is presented. (Results) This study planned a café space in Vietnam that was differentiated from other brands through its application of visual metaphorical elements in the cafe space design. (Conclusions) First, morphological and locational items were applied as architectural metaphor elements. However, because of the specific nature of the site, the facade design was exposed only as a sign expression, and it was difficult to apply a special metaphor. As a location element, there is a straight line from the entrance to the ordering counter, and the metaphor is expressed as an auxiliary idea of a hidden train seat to utilize the space of the inverted ‘ㄱ’ shape. Second, as a spatial visual metaphor element, Cruise’s logo is expressed with a typeface that creates a humorous impression and sense of familiarity and is made bold to increase the strength of the brand and enhance its visibility. Third, by applying the visual metaphor as a whole, the elements were divided and expressed but were designed to form a single context without being semantically separated. To design a differentiated space in a competitive cafe, a visual metaphor and expression element that can visualize implicit and metaphorical meanings, rather than a beautiful space design, is necessary. It was found that a cafe space design that applies visual metaphorical expression elements improves the intrinsic value of the brand for consumers and influences brand preference.
