This paper aims to position the stance of Tanheo’s thoughts in the intellectual history of modern and contemporary Korea, based on the circulation of knowledge in the Korean Peninsula. Particularly, it examines his ideological characteristics by dividing his life into youth and middle age. First, this paper briefly examines the period of the 1920s during which Tanheo’s youth intersected with figures like Choi Namseon and Lee Kwangsu as well as the 1930s marked by active Japanese Buddhist proselytization and the Simjeon Movement. It confirms that the significance of Tanheo’s thoughts during this time identifies Tanheo’s ideological inclination toward preserving the spiritual culture of Korean Peninsula. Furthermore, it compares and contrasts the writings of Tanheo published after the Korean War with the thoughts of Park Jonghong, one of the representatives of contemporary Korean philosophy. Tanheo’s thoughts encompasses Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism, with Buddhism at its core, embracing world philosophy while centered on Korea. This indicates that his philosophical orientation considers both universality and particularity. This paper proposes a method of “supplementary reading,” suggesting that even if certain knowledge was not circulated during a certain philosopher’s lifetime, we can approach his or her thoughts using this method. Although documents related to the eschatology of Taoism seem not to have circulated on the Korean Peninsula, an interpretative approach from a contemporary perspective can deepen the understanding of Tanheo’s thoughts. By considering both “intellectual history and circulation of knowledge” and “non-circulation of knowledge,” this paper endeavors to position Tanheo’s thoughts not only in the context of Buddhist thoughts but beyond, within the realm of modern and contemporary Korean intellectual history. Through these efforts, the distinctive philosophical characteristics and uniqueness of Tanheo are expected to become more prominent.
