< Le Père > written by Florian Zeller depicts the dementia from the perspective of a dementia patient. In order to create a performative work in which the audience can experience dementia indirectly through the eyes of a dementia patient, the play is told from the first-person perspective of a patient. Therefore, all the time, space and information in the play are unclear, making it difficult for the actors to grasp objective facts. To overcome these obstacles and analyze the character objectively, we decided that it was more important to find André's unique personality than to study his dementia symptoms. We used the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), which defines personality disorders based on objective criteria, to identify Andre's unique characteristics. By applying the DSM-5 to André's repetitive behaviors, we were able to identify characteristics of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. After that we tried to analyze the character objectively and logically based on the causes and characteristics of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. But we didn't stop there: we also conducted an empirical study on Andrè with dementia in order to act him out on stage. To express André's obsessive behavior and dementia symptoms, we adopted the improvisational acting training techniques of Ruth Zaporah's < Action Theater >. Among the techniques, we used 'bipolar training', 'prop training', and 'phrase and gesture' training. Through the above process, we could analyze the character of André in < Le Père > specifically and verify the process of building behavior through actual production.
