The purpose of this study is to find out the genre characteristics of Korean request email in the academic field by analyzing the structural move patterns in emails sent by Korean graduate students to professors and to derive a generalized move model of them. First, move types observed in English academic request emails were applied to Korean emails, resulting in 13 move types for Korean request emails in the academic field: Greeting(A), Acknowledging(B), Referencing Earlier Communication(C), Providing Background Info(D), Requesting(E), Elaborating(F), Justifying(G), Providing Progress Info(H), Sharing Personal Info(I), Apologizing for the Request(J), Expressing Advance Gratitude(K), Closing(L), and Signing Off(M). Move type A and L were each divided into 5 stages: Addressing(A1), Making Initial Greeting(A2), Making Self-introduction(A3), Asking about the Professor’s Well-being(A4), Breaking the Ice(A5), and Requesting a Reply(L1), Wishing for Health and Happiness(L2), Expressing Gratitude and Respect(L3), Anticipating a Meeting(L4), Concluding the Message(L5). Next, order, essentiality, and frequency of these move types in the collected 114 emails were investigated. Based on these results, a generalized move model for sending request emails to professors was derived, including 7 conventional move types of ‘A2, A3, D, E, F, L3, M’ and 10 conventional move types of ‘A1, A4, B, G, H, I, J, K, L1, L2’. These findings are expected to be helpful in request email education for Korean learners for academic purposes in the future.
