This paper aims to test and dynamically analyze whether the wealth effect of rising asset prices permanently affects real income and consumption in Korea. To test this empirically, we first analyze the effect of income on consumption through a structural VAR model, which is a system of equations consisting of income, consumption, and asset prices to analyze the dynamics of structural shocks. Second, we use the Beveridge-Nelson decomposition to find the trend of asset prices and income. The estimated structural shock trends in nominal asset prices can independently affect the system as a whole. The empirical analysis shows that the trend of nominal asset prices (stock prices, house prices, and interest rates) after the global financial crisis has a long-term wealth effect in the system, including real GDP and real consumption. In addition, a shock to the upward trend of house prices during this period causes a short-term decline in real GDP and real consumption, which contrasts with the results of the impulse response analysis, which shows that an increase in house prices relative to fundamentals (i.e., cointegration error) increases real GDP and real consumption, which is an important factor to consider when formulating asset price policy.
