In this study, the sentences in the science and technology section of Yahoo Japan (Wisdom Pouch) were analyzed to show usages and modality of ‘wakeda’. Furthermore, Korean corresponding words for different usages of ‘wakeda’ were identified. As a result of classifying 127 sample sentences of ‘wakeda’ by usage, factual assertation, conclusion, paraphrasing, and comprehension account for 41.7%, 37.8%, 14.2%, and 6.3%, respectively. As shown in Chin's study (Chin, 2017), the use of ‘factual assertation’ is most common in the analyzed science and technology texts. Further, it was found that the Korean word, ‘kesita’, is mostly matched to ‘wakeda’; additionally, calculation, language, reasoning, causation, and verb phrase, etc. are comparable to ‘wakeda’. 13 Korean professors who teach Japanese in college were asked to translate selected sample sentences in Korean to determine equivalence between ‘wakeda’ and Korean word ‘kesita’. 81 out of 104 ‘wakeda’ sample sentences are parallel to Korean ‘kesita’, which is 77.9% of all samples. Furthermore, it is analyzed how Korean ‘kesita’ is matched to each usage of ‘wakeda’. Comprehension, paraphrasing, conclusion, and factual assertation account for 88.5%, 84.6%, 73.1%, and 65.4%, respectively. Interestingly, Korean ‘kesita’ is less matched to the main usages (factual assertation, conclusion) of ‘wakeda’, which is lower than two other usages (comprehension and paraphrasing). This finding suggests that the Korean word, ‘kesita’, is well matched when reasoning is explicitly shown in /comprehension, paraphrasing, and conclusion among multiple usages of ‘wakeda’.
