The Huayanjing shu chao (華嚴經疏鈔) was composed by Chenguan (澄觀) in support of the main thesis of Fazang (法藏)’s Five Teachings (五敎). There are six commentaries on the Huayanjing shu chao, the first one is the Huayanjing tanxuan juezeji (華嚴經談玄決擇記), which was composed by the Liao scholar and monk, Xianyan (鮮演). The sixth commentary is the Huayanjing xiantan huixuanji (華嚴經懸談會玄記), composed by the Yuan period monk, Purui (普瑞). These commentaries have different considerations for subject and object concerning the same-different teaching of one vehicle This means that not only does the fifth teaching (第五圓敎) include the other four teachings, but it also distinguishes them. It has been explained in terms of two arguments: one is that only the subject exists as the same (能同), and the other is that both the subject and object exist as the same (能·所同). The same argument arises between the fifth and third teaching (終敎) as well as between the fifth and forth (頓敎) teaching. In the doctrine of non-obstruction among individual phenomena (事事無礙), based on the five teachings, Xianyan and Purui’s arguments seem different, but it can be seen that both are possible if analyzed according to the characteristics of the Buddha and Fazang’s representative compositions, the Jiaoyi fenqi zhang (敎義分齊章).
