Recent research finds that the effective tax rates for both foreign and domestic firms have been steadily decreasing over recent decades and that multinational firms do not have a taxbased cost advantage relative to their domestic counterparts. Implicit taxes are cross-sectional variations in pretax market returns that offset variations in the level of explicit taxes. Examining implicit taxes helps us to better understand any differences in net-tax related benefits accruing to domestic and multinational firms. This paper examines the trend in implicit tax rates over the past 27 years, and examines implicit taxes for multinational firms relative to domestic firms. To investigate the existence of a trend in implicit tax rates over time, we examine a sample of 3,189 firm-year from 1991 to 2017. The results of this paper find for both domestic and multinational firms, reductions of effective tax rates are only partially offset by implicit taxes but that implicit taxes are lower for multinational firms. Our results underscore the implication that measuring differences in explicit taxes without accounting for implicit taxes may lead to incomplete findings.
