王東厓繼承心齋之學的關鍵是對平民意識的把握, 靑少年時期確立的平民意識貫穿了東厓的一生。反身樂學是東厓思想中最有特色的內容之一, 其底色也是平民意識。他的反身樂學思想將陽明、心齋的相關思想融爲一體, 幷在此基礎上進一步使“樂”本體化, 從而發展出立基當下現實生活、充溢着活泼生机的平民儒學思想。一方面, 東厓的反身樂學思想是對宋明以來“孔顔樂處”追尋的一個總結;另一方面, 他的反身樂學思想又內在地彰顯出平民意識走向, 顯示了明代中后期“以道覺民”的儒者“下行”路向的生命力。王東厓從具有强烈理想主義情懷的平民儒者生活出發, 以自己富有吸引力的平民敎育實踐和樂學實踐, 闡揚心齋之學, 在平民意識的傳承及對平民儒者的接引方面, 取得了很大成績, 爲泰州學派平民儒學傳統的建設做出了突出的貢獻, 就此而言, 東厓思想自有拓展, 絶非僅僅是形式上的“克承家學”。
