As a next-generation battery, manganese dioxide-based aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have garnered much attention due to outstanding safety, low cost, non-toxicity, and environmental friendliness. On the other hand, the concrete electrochemical process of manganese dioxide remains elusive, despite extensive literature on various reaction mechanisms. This research successfully synthesized a highly ordered mesoporous manganese dioxide characterized by the β-phase (pyrolusite, 1 x 1 tunnel structure). The energy storage mechanisms related to mesoporous manganese dioxide were carefully examined by utilizing this material as the cathode for AZIBs. Especially, through kinetics studies using GITT and EIS analysis, two distinct energy storage processes, involving H+ insertion and Zn2+ insertion, were identified. The CV test also confirmed that the H+ and Zn2+ insertion mainly contributed to the capacitive and solid-state diffusion-controlled process, respectively. In addition, the high specific surface area and nanoscale framework inherent in the mesoporous structure played a role in the enhanced capacity of mesoporous-MnO2 in comparison to bulk-MnO2.These results offer a more comprehensive understanding of the energy storage mechanisms as well as innovative approaches for developing high-performance cathode materials for next-generation batteries.
