After 1978, as the influence of postmodernism deepened, the West presented norms and standards to the East in an authoritarian and arrogant manner. Additionally, the West arbitrarily imagined the parts of Eastern culture it could accept and arbitrarily integrated the Eastern academic studies it desired. After China's reform and opening up, the new Orientalist aesthetics was created through the efforts of many artists to improve this situation. This paper reinterprets the theory based on Chinese films according to the context of New Orientalism, criticizing the dictatorship and one-sidedness of New Orientalism and reinterpreting New Orientalism at the same time. In terms of the continuation and deduction of modern culture, New Orientalism is a diverse interpretation of the intrinsic meaning of Oriental culture according to the global context, and is an Orientocentric way of thinking according to Oriental standards. Currently, the main topics discussed in New Orientalism are still limited to the formation of Chinese images with Oriental meaning, and this paper uses an Oriental-centered way of thinking based on movies. In other words, it puts new things at the core, maintains the inheritance of local culture, and at the same time goes beyond the limitations of traditional culture and film creation to deeply discover and absorb the essence of pluralistic culture to newly interpret Chinese films. New Orientalism will develop more and more on the international stage with a new appearance, and this paper analyzes related films from the perspective of New Orientalism, specifically examining the changes in Chinese films in each period, cultural significance and importance, and the direction of development of Chinese films. was considered. The main contents of the paper are as follows. Chapter 1 is the introduction and introduces the main contents of this paper, which mainly includes the reason for selecting the topic, the significance of the study, the research situation of New Orientalism in China and abroad, and research thinking and methods. Chapter 2: Criticism of Orientalism theory. Starting from the origin of traditional ideas, the definition of the traditional Orient, the historical conditions formed, and cultural prejudices in Oriental theory are summarized. Traditional Orientalism is Western-centrism's cultural prejudice against the East. Based on this, it represents the value judgment of the cultural and artistic forms of Eastern society in relation to Western influences, and is recognized as cultural misunderstanding and cultural prejudice. Edward Said established a new perspective of New Orientalism based on a comparative analysis of the content of cultural criticism and the intrinsic meaning of post-colonial thought. He explained the theory of New Orientalism, presented arguments, and focused on Chinese Zhou Xuanyul films as the subject of study. It was taken as Chapter 3 takes the perspective of New Orientalism and postmodernism as the starting point and combines China's politics, economic situation, and historical events to deduce Chinese films from 1978 to the present into three stages: the classical period, the transition period, and modern cinema. We organized and analyzed the characteristics and expressions of New Orientalism in Chinese films. Chapter 4 analyzes the construction of the image of the characters of each period, the background of the period, and the selection of themes according to the aspect of the film narrative, and considers the development and changes of Chinese films. Chapter 5 mainly explored the visual aesthetics of film. As film technology continues to optimize and develop, Chinese films have gradually secured a certain position in world cinema, and have also conveyed unique Chinese meaning through costumes, stage design, and music. Chapter 6 analyzed and predicted Chinese films in terms of aesthetic value, cultural value, social value, and commercial value according to the perspective of New Orientalism. Chinese films expanded the research perspective and scope of New Orientalism by stimulating audiences' thinking about human emotions, ethics, morals, and social reality. The final part of the paper is the conclusion, which summarizes and summarizes the main perspectives of this paper and presents issues for future research.
