The Book of Songs is the first collection of poems in China, containing 305 essays reflecting the history, politics, folklore and other aspects of society at the time, and may be called the Incipient stage the Chinese realist Poetry. The poems in the Book of Songs describe a variety of plants by which the poets express their thoughts and emotions. Therefore, it has the function of conveying the thoughts and contents of poetry. The Book of Songs records that the ancient people of that time, who were familiar with the forms, the growth process and characteristics of plants, would choose a wide variety of plants to compose their poems and borrow plant imagery to express their emotions. Therefore, understanding the usefulness and symbolism of plant imagery can be regarded as the first step in understanding the Book of Songs. This manuscript consists of six chapters that explore the imagery and symbolism of plants and the cultural connotations reflected in them. The first introductory chapter discusses the purpose of the study, the current status of domestic and international research, the methodology and content of the study. In the second chapter, the marriage poems are categorized into love poems, marriage poems, abandonment poems, in which the plant imagery is examined and its symbolism is analyzed. The word “sangzhong” in the love poem is not a poem of lust, but has the meaning of a place of secret meeting. It also reveals the fact that the ancient people prayed to the god of mulberry forest (the god of high media) in the mulberry tree forest to give birth to babies. In addition, it also analyzes the meaning and symbolism of giving “orchids and peonies” to each other as a sign of love. And it also explains the deep meaning of giving “papayas, peaches and plums” to their male partners, which means that they want to get married and had their own kids. “Plums and peppercorns” have the meaning and symbolism of “having many children” and “giving birth to children”.The marriage poems are categorized into marriage poems and wedding poems. The marriage poems analyze the symbolism of female plant imagery through “peach blossom, mountain plum blossom, hibiscus blossom” etc. The marriage poems are divided into “male, firewood, and grass for feeding horses. The marriage poems are categorized into “Fake, Xixin, Cuoxin, Shuxin, Shuchu, Shuchu, and Shupu” taking into account the simultaneous appearance of “men, firewood, and grass to feed the horses”. In it, we will discuss that Xixin symbolizes the separation of the woman from her mother's family, which also means marriage. In addition, the image of “Shuxin (ShuchuㆍShupu)” is like a wooden handle that will not be swept away by the current, symbolizing the solid relationship between husband and wife that cannot be separated by any hardship. Poems of abandoned women are characterized by the use of images of vegetables and plants that are useful in daily life, such as “mulberry leaves, motherwort, and radish” in order to emphasize their existence and express their feelings of abandonment and injustice. On the other hand, it expresses the resentment of her husband for abandoning her through the use of evil wood and grass. In the third chapter, the poem stands from two perspectives, the conscripted husband and the lovesick woman. The former explores the resentment of the long service and the longing for home through the changes in the growth of plants such as “bracken and grass”. The latter, on the other hand, expresses her longing for her husband who is serving in the military outside through “cocklebur, hawthorn, fleabane and day lily” and analyzes the symbolic meanings of these images. In the forth Chapter, after dividing the beautiful and thorny poems into beautiful and thorny poems, this part discusses the imagery and symbolism of flowers, plants and trees such as “wild pear tree, green bamboo, and sycamore tree” as well as evil plants and trees such as “withered willows”.The fifth chapter is about the cultural connotation of plant imagery. The cultural significance of plant imagery in the Book of Songs is examined from the perspectives of plant worship, aesthetic concepts reflected by plants, and people’s love at that time. The last chapter concludes with a synthesis of the above.
