최적의 VePeT 모델을 찾기 위해 4가지의 머신러닝 기법을 사용하였으며, GLM(Generalized Linear Model), RDF(RandDom Forest), SVM(Support Vector Machine) 및 AutoML(Auto Machine Learning) 방법이 사용되었다.
The urban heat island (UHI) effect is intensified due to the continuous temperature increase caused from climate change, leading to consistent property and casualty damages in the urban areas. Cities are more vulnerable to heatwaves than rural areas because of UHI. Seoul is a highly dense metropolitan city and has complicated characteristics in geographical and land use. In order to reduce the damage caused by heatwaves in urban areas, it is necessary to observe, analyze, and predict pedestrian-scale temperature accurately. The vertical pedestrian-scale temperature profile prediction model (VePeT) was developed with four machine learning (ML) techniques using data obtained from two high-resolution urban weather observation campaigns in Seoul. The building block 3- dimensional urban meteorological experiment campaign (BBMEX campaign) was conducted at Gwanghwamun (GHM) square in August 2019, while the Jamsil urban meteorological experiment campaign (Jamsil campaign) was conducted in August 2023. The thermal comfort types (TCTs) were defined according to the surface characteristics, types of shading obstacles, and the distance between pedestrians and obstacles to reflect the comfort of pedestrians in the urban area. Input data for the VePeT consisted of meteorological variables in the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) Automated Synoptic Observing System (ASOS) or Automatic Weather Station (AWS). This data included observations of four-level temperature during the two campaigns, as well as TCTs. Four ML techniques were used to find an optimal VePeT model: generalized linear model (GLM), random forest (RDF), support vector machine (SVM) and automatic machine learning (AutoML). Performances of the predicted temperature were evaluated through the regression evaluation indicators (REI) against the observed one. Mean bias (MB), mean absolute error (MAE), root mean squared error (RMSE), and determination coefficient (R2) were calculated according to TCT, four ML models, and four input data. The final VePeT model for each TCT was determined regarding with minimum RMSE and maximum R2. The ML technique and dataset of the final VePeT model were the RDF and AWS for TCT 1, the RDF and ASOS for TCT 2, the AutoML and AWS deviation for TCT 3, the RDF and ASOS for TCT 4, the RDF and AWS for TCT 5, the RDF and AWS for TCT 6, the RDF and AWS deviation for TCT 7, and the AutoML and ASOS deviation for TCT 8. The final model was applied to the Jamsil campaign area and during another period in the GHM square. The four-level temperatures obtained from the Jamsil campaign, KMA meteorological data, and TCTs were used to predict the corresponding-level temperature. The VePeT model predicted well the pedestrian- scale temperature, although the surroundings of the Jamsil are different from those of the GHM square. The RMSE and R2 of the VePeT were 1.02 and 0.82 for TCT 1, 0.88 and 0.86 for TCT 3, 0.77 and 0.63 for TCT 4, and 1.43 and 0.50 for TCT 5, respectively. The performance in Jamsil became lower than GHM square due to the inconsistency of Jamsil and GHM square TCTs. The gridded temperatures in GHM square during the other period were predicted by the final VePeT model. The gridded predicted temperatures were used to produce heat maps and spatial contour plots at various heights during summer days. The VePeT model can only be applied during the heatwave period in clear weather. GHM square TCTs were not representative of all TCTs. The observed pedestrian-scale data was significantly inadequate. Nevertheless, the VePeT model can predict the vertical pedestrian-scale temperatures as long as it has the KMA weather data and TCTs. The VePeT model showed fairly reliable performance displaying the potential of providing the pedestrian-perceived temperatures during heatwaves in urban areas.
