The Effect of Play Using Unstructured Play Materials on Young Children’s Problem Solving Ability The era of the 4th Industrial Revolution emphasizes problem-solving skills to adapt to complex and rapid social changes and creatively solve various problems. In line with this trend of the times, the "2019 Revised Nuri Curriculum" is moving toward an early childhood and play-oriented curriculum that emphasizes learning through young children’s self-directed play. Children enjoy challenging themselves as innate problem solvers, actively exploring and expressing themselves in their own ways. Problem-solving skills that can creatively solve various problems in the future society can be best cultivated in young children’s self-directed play, and this study aims to study the impact of play on children' problem-solving skills. In children play, play materials are necessary tools for young children' active play and help them grow and develop. In particular, play using unstructured play materials which has various choices and possibilities provides the experience of allowing young children to actively participate in play, manipulate and experiment in various ways, and learn through trial and error. This study aims to examine how play using unstructured play materials affect young children's problem-solving skills and sub-elements of young children's problem-solving skills. Research problems to achieve these research purposes are as follows. In this study, the following research questions were set up to find out the effect of play using unstructured play materials on young children's problem-solving skills. Research Question 1. What is the effect of play using unstructured play materials on young children's problem-solving skills? Research Question 2. What is the effect of play using unstructured play materials on the sub-elements of young children's problem-solving skills?2-1. What is the impact of play using unstructured play materials on the discovery and statement of problems that are sub-factors of problem-solving skills?2-2. What is the impact of play using unstructured play materials on the proposal and application of ideas for problem solving, which is a sub-element of problem solving ability?2-3. What is the impact of play using unstructured play materials on the process of concluding problem solving, which is a sub-element of problem solving ability? The subjects of this study were 17 4-year-old children (experimental group) in public kindergartens with similar environments located in S-si, Gyeonggi-do, and 17 4-year-old infants (comparative group) in public kindergartens with similar local conditions, kindergarten environments, and social and economic conditions. Experimental treatment is a play activity using unstructured play materials and was conducted a total of 14 times for 7 weeks from November 7 to December 23, 2022. The experimental group conducted play activities using unstructured play materials, and the comparative group conducted general educational activities that limited unstructured play materials. To find out the impact of play using unstructured play materials on young children's problem-solving skills, this research tool was used by Jang Kyung-hye (1994) who modified and supplemented Ahn Kyung-sook's (1992) from a questionnaire on problem solving by Tegano, Sawyer, and Morean (1989). This research tool consists of a total of three components: discovery and statement of problems, proposal and application of ideas for problem solving, and conclusion on problem solving. To verify the effectiveness of the experiment, a jamovi statistical program was used, and a one-way ANOVA was conducted to verify the difference in scores between post-test results and pre-test results in the effect of play using unstructured play materials on young children’s' problem-solving skills. The following is a summary of the research results based on this research process. First, as a result of comparing the problem-solving test scores of the experimental group and the comparative group after playing using unstructured play materials, the experimental group's young children scored higher in problem-solving than the comparative group's young children, and there was a statistically significant difference. Second, the experimental group that experienced play using unstructured play materials scored higher than the comparative group's score in both discovery and statement of problems, idea suggestion and application of problems, and conclusion scores for problem solving, which are sub-factors of problem solving. Through the above research results, it was found that play using unstructured play materials has a positive effect on young children’s problem-solving ability. In the process of playing using unstructured play materials, young children were able to experience the process of discovering problems on their own, proposing and applying ideas, and making conclusions on problem solving. This suggests that it is important that play using unstructured play materials that can be enhanced, the ability to solve problem situations through various exploration and attempts in the play process, is sufficiently carried out in the early childhood education field.
