This study aims to explain females' conspicuous consumption behaviors in the context of mating goals (i.e., mate attraction or mate guarding) based on evolutionary psychology, and males' reactions and attitudes to these females' conspicuous consumption behaviors. Study 1 shows that under the mate guarding goal condition, high power females are more inclined to conspicuous consumption than low power females. Under the mate attraction goal condition, low power females are more inclined to conspicuous consumption than high power females. Study 2 found that males perceive females who used luxury (vs. non-luxury) brands to have higher financial standards for their mates, and that females' conspicuous consumption may discourage males' affiliative behavior. Males perceived that they perceived females to be more authentic when conspicuous consumption behaviors were matched with females' power. Luxury brands can enhance females' physical attractiveness, and males' reactions and attitudes toward females were more positive. However, if males perceive females to be inauthentic when females' conspicuous consumption behavior conflicts with their power, males will have negative reactions and attitudes. These findings not only provide a theoretical contribution to the field of evolutionary and consumer psychology, but also offer suggestions for product marketing, providing new directions for future research in evolutionary psychology of human mating strategies.
