The 19th-century art song is a music genre that vocal melodies and piano accompaniments play together as a single music. Instrumental function of piano has been developed more than before the 19th Century. This development enabled piano to make abundant volume, diverse timbre, and delicate expression. In addition, a number of composers began to express specific and exquisite indications in their piano works. These facts had been allowing piano music to develop increasingly. Accompanists’ role in music, which had been limited just to fill harmony, gradually expanded during the period. The piano accompaniment not only supports the vocal melody, but also has an equal relationship with the vocal melody through musical communication together. Therefore, it plays a major role in expressing the content of the poem and the mood of music. Schubert contributed greatly to build equal relationship between vocal melody and piano accompaniment. Schumann emphasized and enlarged the role of piano accompaniment following Schubert. The purpose of this study is to support analysis of 19th-century art songs by understanding how the role of piano accompaniment in art songs had developed. This study focuses on the piano accompaniment of Schumann's love song Op.42 and also identifies his musical characteristic and intention in the piano accompaniment in order to analyze various musical expressions and performance techniques which Schumann intends to show. This study explains the development and characteristic of 19th Century’s art songs and Schumann’s theoretical background. It also introduces Shamiso, who wrote the poem cited in the composition and explains the musical characteristic of piano accompaniment through methods of both macroscopic and microscopic musical analysis. At the same time, it analyzes the equivalence of vocal line and piano accompaniments, its natural connection and balance, and dramatic expression in the music. Through Schumann’s great contribution, the piano accompaniment of the 19th-century art song not only supported vocal melodies, but also played a important role in a musical dialogue with the singer’s line. Furthermore, the accompaniment expressed the content of the poem and the mood of the music due to Schumann’s works. The advent of prelude, interlude and postlude which is longer than the past and various technique of piano created an expanded lyricism and emotional expression. This shows that not only the role of the piano accompaniment has expanded, but also piano accompaniment has the an independent role from the vocal melody in Schumann’s songs. Schumann's various musical expressions and performance techniques in the piano accompaniment influenced the development of the art songs and other composers during the Romantic period. I wish not only that this study is helpful when analyzing other 19th-century art songs, but also that research on Schumann’s other song cycle will be actively studied.
