This study is a research on early modern Dancheong that have not been studied in Dancheong research due to the limitation of the concept of "modern" until now. In this paper, we conducted research on the inside Dancheong of the 14 single-Palatial Buildings and Royal Residences, which are the common early modern Dancheong. The specific period covered in this study ranges from the construction of the target pavilion in 1885, the late Joseon Dynasty, to 1926, the middle of the Japanese colonial period. Before conducting this study, we organized the forms of Dancheong in the Joseon Dynasty and focused on the Dancheong of the early 19th century, which was the immediate preceding period. Based on this, in Chapter 3, we analyzed the changes in the Dancheong patterns by architectural elements through a comparison with early modern Dancheong. As a result of comparing the Dancheong patterns of each element, it was observed that the Toeryangs were very simple, while the Daeryangs were elaborately decorated, clearly showing stylistic differences by element.Furthermore, while Moro-Danchung was the main form used during the Joseon Dynasty, it was confirmed that a higher-grade form called Sunhwa-moro-Danchung emerged as the main grade in the early modern period, and even higher-grade Kum-moro-Danchung was used in the palace. Especially during the period of the Korean Empire, the Sunhwa-moro-danchung form was used in all elements of the pavilion's interior. In addition, although there were no major differences in the composition of the head-end patterns compared to the previous period, differences were observed in the coloring method, and overall, there was a trend of clearer color contrast. In Chapter 4, based on the analysis results from Chapter 3, we examined in detail the consistent patterns and characteristics found in early modern Dancheong. The first point is the use of pigments other than Noerog(a traditional green mineral pigment) for the back of the neck and gyeppung. The gyeppung was variously colored with Changdan, Yangcheong, and Yangrok, while the back of the neck was painted with Yangcheong in all pavilions, suggesting that it was considered as one of the decorative elements. The second point is the origin and characteristics of the new head-end form, Yangjok-morocho, and the conjectured reasons for its introduction. It is presumed that this was done intentionally to reveal the hierarchy. These points are considered attempts to bring changes to the architecture in line with the status of the imperial kingdom. The third point is the introduction of various Gilsang patterns on the transverse members other than the ceiling, and the origins and uses of elements such as Cloud and Treasures Patterns, the Curved Water Pattern with Wan, and Jjikeumjil and Gummun were examined. The Gilsang patterns were used to express authority and dignity while wishing for the fortune of the owner of the pavilion. Thus, in order to understand the reasons for the changes in Dancheong in the early modern period, which had been almost unchanged until the late Joseon Dynasty, we first examined the use of pigments, the main material of Dancheong. Joseon relied on imports for most of its pigments for a long time, and the process of finding high-quality pigments was a burden. However, artificial pigments produced in the West were cheap and served as the best alternative because they had good hiding power and colorability, reducing the burden. The introduction of such imported pigments served as a foundation for bringing about chromatic changes.Lastly, we sought to understand the relationship of influence through a comparative analysis of architectural styles between the royal court and temples associated with the similar period. The 19th century was a time when the royal court provided the most support for Buddhism throughout the Joseon Dynasty. This trend was particularly prominent during the reign of King Gojong, with major contributors being high-ranking women of the royal court, including Queen Min. It is understood that Daewongun supported these women's contributions to solidify his own political position. Against this backdrop, numerous temples supported by the royal court were established in the vicinity of Gunggi, and we confirmed that three of these temples have a direct connection to Dancheong. Considering that these temples were established earlier than Dancheong, there is a high possibility that the architectural style was transmitted from the temples to the palace. While it is believed that Painter Monks had some influence in this transmission process, the lack of concrete evidence beyond the personal records in the Uigwe poses limitations in making definitive conclusions. If further research is expanded, a more comprehensive study can be conducted. In conclusion, the early modern court ceramics examined in this study had a relatively short period of about 50 years to be included as a general style category. However, through this research, it has been confirmed that the style consistently continued in palace architecture even in the unique historical context of the Japanese colonial period. It is hoped that this study can serve as a foundation for the restoration and repair of court-related buildings constructed or reconstructed during the modern period in the future.
