Analyzing the Piri melodies of 〈Heoncheonsu〉 on the staff of the Yiwangjik Aakbu in the Japanese colonial era and those of 〈Heoncheonsu〉 by Seo Han-beom‧Jeong Jae-kuk, this research aims to examine the characteristics of 〈Yeombul(Buddha-smrti)〉, Jeongak(court music) called 〈Heoncheonsu〉 now. As a former name used when Samhyeonyukgak 〈Yeombul〉 or Saengsobyeongju 〈Yeombul〉 was played at the Yiwangjik Aakbu, 〈Heoncheonsu〉 was the piece frequently performed in the Jeongak during the Japanese colonial era. However, in the late 20th century, only performance of 〈Heoncheonsu〉 of Saengsobyeongju was handed down in the Jeongak, and Samhyeonyukgak〈Yeombul〉 has been established as the piece mainly played in the folk music. Hence, there are few studies on the Piri melodies of 〈Yeombul〉 in the Jeongak. Research findings on 〈Heoncheonsu〉 on the staff of the Yiwangjik Aakbu are as follows. Based not on real tone but on fingering, this score was transcribed by setting the third line from the bottom as [Hwang(黃)]. Though it is Hyangak, it is characterized by notating [Hwang(黃)] as [C], which is the standard of Dangak, using C clef. As for the transcription of Jangdan, with tempo 𝅗𝅥 = 44, time 3/2, it is also characterized by notating two bars as the single Jangdan. It is 36 bars but consists of 18 Jangdan. An analysis shows that the variation of standard phrase of 6 Jangdan was repeated three times. There exist very limited albums of 〈Heoncheonsu〉 played with Piri in the late 20th century, and Piri melodies of 〈Heoncheonsu〉 remain on the 1982 album 《Hwajeong Kim Tae-seop's 60th Birthday Concert》, a member of Yiwangjik Aakbu, and it was played by his disciple Seo Han-beom. Compared with the Piri melodies of 〈Heoncheonsu〉 on the staff of the Yiwangjik Aakbu, the transcription shows that it has been handed down in an almost same manner. There is another material on Piri melodies of 〈Heoncheonsu〉. It is 〈Heoncheonsu〉 played by Jeong Jae-kuk included in 《50 Years of Single Path toward the Sound of Piri: ‘The Artistic World of Gasan Jeong Jae-kuk’》published in 2007. Unlike 〈Yeombul〉 usually performed with opulence by setting the 3rd hole as ‘Gung’, the piece has the characteristic of the lower compass and smooth performance like the Piri solo 〈Sangnyeongsanpuri〉 because the 7th hole was set as ‘Gung’. Therefore, it shows that modulation and change of performance styles are possible when 〈Heoncheonsu〉 is played. This paper investigated the scores and music data related to the Piri melodies of 〈Heoncheonsu〉, Samhyeonyukgak music of Jeongak which are not played frequently at present. Even though it is known as the piece of folk music, Daepungryu, this study reveals that it has been performed continually in the Jeongak. In addition, it also shows that a variety of variations are possible by players. Hence, this paper is expected to be helpful for players to create various kinds of music at the boundary between Jeongak and folk music.
