The life of photography with a subordinate refers to the period from 1979 when he first began learning photography until he died of illness in 2003. The year 1989 was an important turning point in Chinese photography history at the time, and the concept and format of photography with subordinates can be said to be an important year that goes beyond the initial stage and enters a full maturity period. Starting in 1989, this study aims to divide his photography career into two stages and analyze it in conjunction with the main trends of the photography of the time. His work is a "modern" photograph of farmers' as major subject and his life is a decades-long journey in search of it during the transition ofChinese society in the new era. Furthermore, Hou Dengke is obsessedwith documentary photography, paying attention to expressions of authenticity and humanity from the days when he was not familiar with photography, and continuously reflects self-awareness in the process. Factors such as history, times, and individual situationss gave birth to Chinese documentary photographers who lived in the same era as Hou Dengke, and to rural documentary photos of Hou Dengke, which could only have been born in that generation. Later, some scholars praised him as "a monumental name for contemporary photography history, and his photography, career, and thinking represent Chinese photographers since the 1980. This speaks to the great contribution and capability of Hou Dengke to the history of Chinese documentary photography. According to the concept of "the present world" with Hou Dengke, this study aims to enter the four documentary events with him, focusing on the concept of a trials with Hou Dengke and a photo studio about a documentary. In order to discuss the historical meaning of documentary photography with Hu et al., it has a role of improving history and documenting history, but in this study, Hu et al. discussed what limitations exist there as documentary photographers after being established in New China. Although there are limitations in the concept of photography, his photo works have a great influence on Chinese documentary photographers. Looking at his practice, rituals, and works of documentary photography it conveys a double meaning of recording history and criticizing reality. Therefore, how the documentary concept occurred, developed and matured, and further, the characteristics of his photography style andthe process of forming practice were also considered. This study summarized his photographic career and the works completed with the concept of a photographic documentary, while examining his photographic spirit in detail in light of the environment of the photographic world of the time. Hou Dengke was not the first photographer to take pictures of rural areas, but his photos contained unique and deep meanings and even visual expressions of Chinese humanism. These three titles, "the underprivileged," "the peasant," and "the amateur," were always followed in his lives. Born as a son of a farmer, he still maintained his faith and love for photography even in an era when he lacked complex and diverse living conditions and photography theory, and then pioneered simple and authentic documentary by capturing various human images from the class of bottom of society. Hou Dengke's concept of "the present world" in documentary photos played a major role in overcoming the vacuum in Chinese history in the 1980s. Historically, he promoted the awakening of the Chinese photography world at the time with his critical consciousness of "direct image concept" and "beauty is life itslef." Furthermore, the Chinese people's photographic history was obtained by improving the errors of "decorations" and "fiction" that had been prevalent in the photographic world for a long time since the Cultural Revolution. In addition, his belief that 'people are fundamental' made him rethink the relationship between people and people, between people and the environment, and between people and the times.
