In grade schools, the subject of ethics plays an important role as the most crucial subject for character cultivation. The purpose of this study is to confirm whether Korean and Chinese grade school's ethics textbooks faithfully reflect humanism education elements and to present a direction for humanism education by identifying problems in humanism education in grade school's ethics subject. For this purpose, this study compared and analyzed the contents of humanism education in Korean and Chinese grade school's ethics textbooks and discussed the limitations and improvement directions of humanism education in Korea and China based on the analysis results. The analysis criteria for grade school's ethics textbooks were the eight core virtues of humanism education, namely filial piety, cooperation, responsibility, honesty, communication, consideration, respect, and courtesy, as indicated in the Korean Humanism Education Promotion Act. Based on these standards, this study compared and analyzed the contents of eight core virtues of humanism education in ethics textbooks from 3rd to 6th grade for Korean and Chinese grade schools. The main contents are summarized as follows. First, in the Korean and Chinese grade school's ethics textbooks, the contents of humanism education are presented in various ways, whereas the character element tends to decrease as the grade increases. Also, it is common that 'filial piety' appears only in the lower grades, 'responsibility’ and ‘respect’ frequently appear in the 4th grade, and ‘consideration’ appears less in Korean and Chinese grade schools' ethics textbooks. There is a difference in that 'communication' appears less in China than in Korea.Second, Korean and Chinese grade school's ethics textbooks deal with the eight core virtues of humanism education, and the learning contents are similar. Both countries deal with 'courtesy' that must be observed at home, at school, and in public, 'filial piety’ toward parents, 'consideration' and 'cooperation' between friends, 'communication' as a way to resolve conflicts, and 'honesty' based on introspection. Third, Korean and Chinese grade school's ethics textbooks reflect the unique social characteristics of each country. Since Korea is currently divided between the two Koreas, it emphasizes the content of 'responsibility' for Korean citizens to learn, whereas Chinese textbooks are designed to learn the virtues of 'cooperation' through the contents that are currently social issues as China has established and promoted various policies at the government level regarding environmental issues. Fourth, Korean humanism education focuses on learners, while Chinese humanism education focuses on national-related content. In Korea, the features of learner-centered education are also reflected in the humanism education of ethics textbooks, and in China, ethics textbooks reflect China's patriotism and love of the people. However, Korean and Chinese grade schools' humanism education has limitations in that the eight core values of humanism education are not balanced evenly, the content of 'consideration' is insufficient, the character element decreases in higher grades, and difficult content is presented. Therefore, the three aspects of the direction that humanism education in Korean and Chinese grade schools should go are as follows. First, in terms of ethics textbooks, they have to balance all elements of the character, the contents of the textbook should be organized according to the learner's levels and should include contents related to life and practical experience activities. Second, in terms of school, they need to improve the school environment that heavily focuses on entrance exams and grades and provide humanism education academically through various subjects such as national languages and physical education in addition to ethics. Third, the family and society have to cultivate students’ characters in addition to school education for effective character cultivation.
