(Teachers of Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages: TCSOL)는 이문화에 적응하는 과정에서 문화권의 특성에따라 색다른 경험을 갖게 되고 이 과정에서 이문화적응 전략을사용한다.
Cross-cultural adaptation is a continuous process of interaction between two cultural backgrounds. With the deepening cooperation between China and Arab culture in politics, economy and culture in recent years, the development of International Chinese Education in Arab culture saw a historical opportunity, while it also faces many challenges and difficulties. Teachers of Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCOSL) in Arab Culture also share different experiences in the process of cross-cultural adaptation. A study was conducted by the author to understand the cross-cultural adaptation experiences of TCSOL in the region. This study applied Strauss and Corbin’s (1967) Grounded Theory to conduct in-depth interviews with five TCSOL in Arab culture, and the data collected were coded and organized through categorization, induction, and integration. The results of the study are presented as follows.Open Coding has yielded 381 concepts, 83 subcategories and 18 categories. The causal conditions are “knowledge of local language”, “hardship of post-duty”, and “differences in adaptation between novice and experienced TCSOL”. The contextual conditions were “attitude of the manager,” “impact of cultural differences on adaptation,” and “factors leading to depression”. From the perspective of the phenomenon, the “difficulty of cross-cultural adaptation” is noticed by the author. The mediating conditions are “perspectives on the evaluation of colleagues and leaders,” “the power of cultural commonalities in guiding adaptation,” “strategies for resolving negative emotions,” and “reasons for becoming an oversea TCSOL” and “TCSOL’s perceptions of general competence”. Action/interaction strategies are “strategies for getting along with local people,” “pre-service strategies for novice teachers,” “focusing on adaptation with colleagues,” and “supporting strategies for administrator-teacher interactions”. The results are “gaining from the dispatched experience and teacher growth” and “necessary training to guide TCSOL’s adaptation”.The occurrence of the phenomenon of “hardship of cross-cultural adaptation” among TCSOL, the “cause phase” in which the need for cross-cultural adaptation is recognized, the “result phase” in which difficulties in implementing crosscultural adaptation arise, and the “solution phase” in which various cross-cultural adaptation strategies are explored and applied. The dispatched TCSOL has explored the strategies of cross-cultural adaptation, encountered various problems in the actual implementation of cross-cultural adaptation strategies, and repeatedly experienced the “hardships of cross-cultural adaptation”, and came up with the strategies of cross-cultural adaptation for TCSOL in Arab cultureaccording to the model analysis at three levels: personal, managerial, and social. Strategies at the individual level included “pre-service strategies for novice teachers” and “adaptation with colleagues”; strategies at the administrator level included “supporting strategies for administrator-teacher interactions”; and for the social level, it reaches the strategies for “getting along with local people”. Through the model analysis, it was found that the difficulties of cross-cultural adaptation among TCSOL in Arab culture are not only reflected in personal reasons, but also influenced by a variety of factors from the management institutions and the society as a whole. This study proposes meaningful cross-cultural adaptation experiences for TCSOL in Arab culture to adapt to local work and life, as well as cross-cultural adaptation strategies that can be applied. Through the intervention and guidance of appropriate external factors, TCSOL’s cross-cultural adaptation competency will be cultivated in advance. In addition, this study proposes a variety of context conditions and mediating conditions that influence the implementation of individual strategies of TCSOL, which can potentially help them apply and understand cross-cultural adaptation strategies flexibly according to their different situations and backgrounds in Arab culture.
