Bowlby was a psychoanalyst who proposed attachment theory, and believed that mental health and behavioral problems could be attributed to the characteristic of developing infancy. The firstborn as the only child in a family has lived happily, receiving a lot of love, attention and protection from parents before the birth of a new baby. But from the moment a new baby is born, the firstborn faces a potentially serious crisis in the family. This is because with the birth of a new baby, the firstborn has to adapt himself to the new situation that suddenly occurs at home. However, there are many firstborns who cannot adjust themselves to the new situation. The common feature that appears in them is that the firstborns are worried that their parents' love and their favorable status will be taken away, and they fall into serious anxiety and fear. This leads to them jealousy and disgust towards the new baby, by showing such be haviors as being obsessed with their own things and by desiring more the love and care from the parents. Moreover the firstborns even attack the new baby to express their resentment and anger. If parents do not understand these negative emotions and their increased demands, then the firstborn may show a symptom such as regression and thus the sibling relationship may worsen. However, as sibling relationships affect parent relationships by these problems that the firstborns experience as he grows up, so parents need to be guided early to take care of these developmental changes. In this study, the main purpose is to analyze the psychological problems of these firstborn children who are the main characters of three picture books - Helen Cooper's Little Monster Did It! and Ezra Jack Keats's Peter's Chair and Kevin Henkes's Julius, the Baby of the World. The reason is that these children expose their negative emotions and degenerative behaviors caused by the birth of a new baby. These stories in the picturebooks may help parents to understand the firstborn's inner minds which could lead them to overcome their difficult situations as a parent, and finally could guide the firstborns to build their positive sibling relationships. Little Monster Did It! is a creative picture book. In the story, the firstborn Amy believes the new baby interferes her intimate life, depriving her of the mother and father's love and care. However, Amy recognized that the new baby could not live alone without parental care, so she sympathized with the new baby, and recognized the importance of her family, and accepted the new baby as a family member. Peter's Chair shows a familiar story. The hero, Peter has become very clingy to his favorite thing such as his old chair after his mother gave birth to a new baby. Peter realizes that the new baby is a troublesome. So he decides to run away from home with his small chair. However, when he was tired to sit on the small chair. Finally he accepted his sister. In Julius, the Baby of the World, after the new baby is born, the heroine, Lily secretly bullied the new baby. Not only that, she tries to draw her parents' attention back to her by running away from home. In the end, Lily got rid of her anxiety about her younger brother by recovering her love for her brother. The birth of a new baby can destroy the attachment between the firstborn and the mother, and lead to cognitive, social, and emotional difficulties in the firstborn in the long term. However, when negative emotions about a new baby are resolved and a positive sibling relationship is established, the firstborn acts to accept, love, and care for the new baby as a family member. Through these picturebooks, parents can learn how to efficiently guide sibling conflicts through picture books. The picturebooks may in lighten both the parents and the firstborn children by making them aware that the new baby is not a competitor and by rather encouraging them to take care of the new baby as their brother and as their family member.
본 연구는 헬렌 쿠퍼의 『꼬마 괴물인형이 그랬어요!』(Little Monster Did It!), 에즈라 잭 키츠의 『피터의 의자』(Peter's Chair), 캐빈 헨크스의 『줄리어스, 세상에서 제일 예쁜 아기』(Julius, the Baby of the World)
