Wong Kar-wai, a representative director of Asian literary cinema, has a particularly strong personal style among Hong Kong film directors. However, she is also longing for freedom, equality and love. The 23 sets of her cheongsam reflex the changes of her feelings. While in , Su Lizhen is a mysterious gambler who wears a black cheongsam. Instead of wearing the gorgeous and sexy cheongsam, Bai Ling wears the restrained and simple one, reflecting herself as a loser in love. In , as an independent woman, Gong Er wears a loose dark cheongsam, while the traditional housewife Zhang Yongcheng wears the cheongsam of warm colors.Wong Kar-wai explores the sensitive and complex psychology of women. The female characters in his movie all change between the active and passive images according to their feelings and psychology. They are modern women who desire love. Hong Kong and the post-modern spirits are influenced by both eastern and western culture, which can be demonstrated by Wong Kar-wai’s films. The women in Wong Kar-wai’s films are not traditional eastern women. Instead, they are subversive and independent, showing the challenging feminism. The women portrayed in Wong’s films not only convey the traditional oriental aesthetic form, but also conform to the fashion, which integrate the postmodernism and express the feminism under the gender balance.
