The luxury market has continued to grow worldwide over the past decade, achieving a value of approximately $1.6 trillion in 2018 at a 5% year-on-year growth rate (Bain and Company, 2018). It is of great theoretical and practical significance to study how consumers can get a preference for the prominence of luxury brand logos as more and more consumers are willing to buy luxury products. Han、Nunes、and Dréze(2010) stated that the prominence of the preferred luxury brand logo varies depending on the consumer's social status. Many consumers buy high-profile luxury products of the logo to seek connection with the high society. Whether consumers prefer luxury products with high logo prominence or luxury products with low logo prominence should be determined based on the characteristics of consumers, not a comprehensive conclusion.Baek Seung-geun (2014) called "self-monitoring" the personality trait of constantly paying attention to and controlling how one's appearance is reflected in others in social situations. Debono and Rubin (1995) found that high self-monitors value the external attributes of the product more, and low self-monitors value the intrinsic quality of the product more. Therefore, this study predicts that the tendency to prefer products with high logo prominence and products with low logo prominence varies depending on the type of self-monitoring of consumers. Therefore, a hypothesis was presented for this and an experiment was conducted. In Experiment 1, it was found that the interaction effect between luxury brand logo remarkable and consumer self-monitoring was significant. In other words, when the logo remarkability is high, it was found that the consumer purchase intention of high self-monitoring was higher than that of low self-monitoring consumers. On the other hand, it was found that consumers with low self-monitoring had a higher purchase intention than consumers with high self-monitoring.Brand familiarity is defined as product-related experiences accumulated by consumers through product use or advertising (Alba and Hutchinson 1987).Heo Young-soo (2016) stated that as consumers' familiarity with the brand increases, they shift from external characteristics of the product to interest in the internal meaning of the brand. As consumers' brand familiarity increases, they will move from interest in non-brand features to interest in internal quality of the brand, and pay a premium by selecting products with low-profile logos. Therefore, hypothesis 2 was presented and the experiment was conducted.Experiment 2 studied the prominence of luxury brand logos and brand familiarity. As predicted, interactions existed. In the case of logo prominence, consumers with low brand familiarity have higher purchase intention than consumers with high brand familiarity, while consumers with high brand familiarity have higher brand familiarity than consumers with low brand familiarity. As a result of this study, it is academic in that it gave insight to research related to consumer choice in marketing and psychology by comprehensively analyzing the relationship between consumer self-monitoring and brand familiarity to obtain high purchase intention while consuming luxury brands.
