This study empirically analyzes the effects of managerial overconfidence and corporate debt constraints on the R&D investment intensity of Chinese listed companies from 2010 to 2019, which few studies have examined yet. This study uses managerial overconfidence and debt constraints as independent variables and corporate R&D investment intensity as the dependent variable. It examines how debt constraints affect the relation between managerial overconfidence and R&D investment intensity, using the moderating effect of debt constraint. Furthermore, the relationship between managerial overconfidence and R&D investment intensity has been analyzed by considering debt maturity, such as short-term and long-term debt. Meanwhile, according to the different ownership structures of Chinese listed companies, the listed companies are divided into state-owned enterprises and non-state-owned, so the state-owned dummy variable is added to the analysis. This study thus investigates its impact on the relation between managerial overconfidence and R&D investment intensity by adding the interaction term of managerial overconfidence and the state-owned dummy variable. The empirical results are summarized as follows: First, managerial overconfidence positively affects corporate R&D investment intensity. Second, corporate debt constraints have a statistically significant adverse effect on R&D investment intensity. Third, debt constraints have a statistically significant effect on inhibiting the relation between managerial overconfidence and the R&D investment intensity. Fourth, although short-term debt inhibits the relationship between managerial overconfidence and corporate R&D investment intensity, long-term debt shows no inhibitory effect. Fifth, by adding the state-owned dummy variable, the study finds that the moderating effect of debt constraints on the relationship between managerial overconfidence and corporate R&D investment intensity varies with the companies’ ownership structures. It is found that debt constraints only have the above-mentioned inhibitory effect for non-state-owned enterprises, while they have no inhibitory effect for state-owned enterprises. It implies that the corporate ownership structure shows adverse effects on the relationship between managerial overconfidence and corporate R&D investment intensity. It can be interpreted that state-owned enterprises have natural inhibitory effects on R&D investment intensity that might be caused by managerial overconfidence due to the monitoring role of the government. This study contributes to the prior literature regarding analyzing the relation between managerial overconfidence and corporate R&D investment intensity by considering the moderating effects of both debt constraints with various maturity and those of corporate ownership structures.
