As a critical tool of environmental news reporting, environmental documentary photographs activate the public awareness of high risk of environmental events while spreading environmental knowledge to the public. While many environmental documentary photographs show warmth and humanity, full of moral appeal, there is a category of environmental documentary photographs that are often full of violence, destruction, pain and even death. Strongly visually stimulating, such photographs inspire rich emotional experiences of the viewers. According to psychology, emotions are the motivations that can evoke psychological activities and behaviors. Therefore, the emotional stimulation of environmental documentary photographs plays a role in scaling and guiding the public attitude towards environmental news, followed by arousing the public emotions and then influencing the public opinion. Within the horizons of the cognitive theory of emotions, this study uses Hoffman's cognitive mediational theory of emotion as the theoretical framework of emotion and selects the prize-winning works at the World Press Photo Contest (WPP) in the category of natural environment as the object of research, using the interactive meaning in the visual grammar theory as the visual analytics tool for the content analysis of environmental documentary photographs. This study aims to explore the differences in visual interaction and emotional expression in environmental documentary photographs, and to analyze how emotions are designed and constructed in environmental documentary photographs. Therefore, this study provides a systematic theoretical tool for analyzing the visual representation and emotions regarding documentary photographs, and guides the strategies of emotional mobilization while using the documentary photographs by the media. Findings indicate that an environmental documentary photograph can establish a social relationship between the subject of the image and the viewer's imagination by utilizing interactive resources of visual grammar. In the emotional response induced by the matching of stimulus and visual representation, the emotion is directly transmitted through emotional empathy; in the emotional response induced by the stimulus meanings, the emotion is transmitted indirectly through the classification of emotional schemas and the evaluation of emotional attribution. Findings also indicate that emotional expressions with different emotional tendencies differ in terms of visual interaction and effects of emotional communication. Environmental documentary photographs adopting a positive emotional tendency are more likely to mobilize interactive resources that facilitate positive emotional expressions, emphasizing positive emotional empathy and adopting emotional schemas of happiness and trust orientation to highlight achievement attributions; environmental documentary photographs adopting a negative emotional tendency are more likely to mobilize interactive resources that sensationalize negative emotional expressions, emphasizing negative emotional empathy and adopting emotional schemas of sadness and fear orientation to highlight attribution of responsibility. Finally, based on a questionnaire survey, the study verifies the effect of the emotions transmitted by environmental documentary photographs on viewers and the differences in the communication effects of different emotional tendencies, and concludes that negative emotional tendencies are more likely to stimulate an emotional response from viewers than positive emotional tendencies and then lead to environmental protection behavior.
