The surface PM2.5 concentrations were calculated using meteorological variables (i.e., temperature, relative humidity, wind speed) and ceilometer backscatter intensities for about 19 months and compared with the measured PM2.5 concentrations. To quantify the importance of weather conditions for calculating surface PM2.5 concentrations, eight different weather conditions were considered. To investigate the impacts of meteorological variables on the surface PM2.5 concentrations, correlations between the meteorological variables and the surface PM2.5 concentrations were determined. It was shown that the correlations were depended on weather conditions. Cross-validation was performed to prevent data overfitting of the surface PM2.5 concentration calculation regression model for each weather condition. It was revealed that the determined optimal upper limit heights and coefficients using the cross-validation depended greatly on weather conditions, which had prominent influences on the calculated surface PM2.5 concentrations. When the calculated surface PM2.5 concentrations and the measured surface PM2.5 concentrations were compared, the case where meteorological variables were considered for all eight weather conditions showed better results (i.e., higher correlation coefficient and lower root mean square error). In addition, the method of applying the optimal heights for each weather condition showed much better results than those with a constant upper limit height (e.g., 150 m) used in previous studies. The vertical distributions of backscatter intensities as functions of weather conditions were also analyzed.
