The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between parents-child cohesion, academic self-efficacy, and subjective well-being of left-behind and non-left-behind children in rural areas of Henan Province, China, and the factors that influence subjective well-being of left-behind children. Therefore, the parents-child cohesion Scale, the Academic Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Adolescent Subjective Well-Being Scale were selected for the study. The following results were obtained from a survey of 402 left-behind and 382 non-left-behind children in grades 7 to 9 in rural areas of Henan Province, China.Firstly, the subjective well-being of left-behind and non-left-behind children are higher than average. The academic satisfaction and freedom satisfaction of left-behind children are lower than the average level. The negative emotions of non-left-behind children are lower than average.Second, subjective well-being, parents-child cohesion, and academic self-efficacy were higher among non-returned children than left-behind children. In particular, the left-behind children had higher negative emotions than the non-left-behind children, and there was no difference in mother-child bonding.Thirdly, differences in demographic variables of subjective well-being: (1) The higher the grade level of the left-behind children, the lower the subjective well-being, life satisfaction, and positive emotions. (2) The subjective well-being and life satisfaction of left-behind children were higher for boys than for girls, and the negative emotions of girls were higher than those of boys. The negative emotions of non-retention children were higher for girls than for boys. (3) The higher the family economic income of both left-behind and non-leaving-behind children, the higher the subjective well-being, life satisfaction, and positive emotions. (4) The longer the duration of stay-behind children, the lower the subjective well-being, life satisfaction, and positive emotions, and the longer the duration of stay-behind children are over five years, the subjective well-being will be significantly lower. (5) On the variable cause of contact frequency. There is no significant difference in the subjective well-being of left-behind children in terms of contact frequency. However, there is a significant difference in positive and negative emotions. Frequent contact with parents can increase positive emotions and decrease negative emotions.Fourth, in the left-behind and non-left-behind children, parent-child cohesion, academic self-efficacy, subjective well-being, life satisfaction and positive emotions were positively and negatively related to negative emotions. It should be noted that no significant correlations were found between positive emotions and negative emotions for left-behind and non-left-behind children. The influence of whether or not to stay behind, parents-child cohesion, and academic self-efficacy on subjective well-being and each dimension: (1) Among both left-behind and non-leaving-behind children, parents-child cohesion had the most decisive influence on subjective well-being, followed by academic self-efficacy, and whether or not to stay behind had the lowest influence. Academic self-efficacy had the most decisive influence on life satisfaction, followed by parents-child cohesion, and whether or not to stay behind had the lowest influence. Parents-child cohesion had the most decisive influence on positive emotions, followed by whether or not to stay behind, and academic self-efficacy had the lowest influence. Whether or not to stay behind had the most decisive influence on negative emotions, followed by parents-child cohesion, and academic self-efficacy had the lowest influence. (2) Among left-behind children, parents-child cohesion had a more substantial influence on subjective well-being and positive emotions than academic self-efficacy. The influence of academic self-efficacy on life satisfaction and negative emotions was more substantial than that of parents-child cohesion. (3) Among non-stay children, academic self-efficacy had a higher impact on subjective well-being and life satisfaction than parents-child cohesion. Academic self-efficacy did not affect positive and negative emotions. This study provides an understanding of the current situation of left-behind children in Henan Province, China, reveals the factors that influence the subjective well-being of left-behind children, and provides some theoretical basis for intervention in the problem of left-behind children.
