This study used a dictionary-based sentiment analysis, one of big data methods, to examine whether media reports through social media are more subjective than traditional news reports and what their aspects are like. Specifically, status messages posted on Twitter accounts of major news organizations were collected and compared with news headlines and leads reported during the same period of time in terms of their sentiment status and its directionality. In addition, given that subjectivity may vary depending on the theme of the article as well as partisanship of the press, news messages were classified according to 1) whether or not they were related to COVID-19 vaccines and 2) whether they were reported by conservative or liberal news organizations. Through this comparative analysis, this study investigates how media reports change in the expansion of social-media environment when it comes to the journalistic objectivity.Data were status messages on Twitter accounts of, as well as news headlines and lead messages from, two conservative news outlets (Chosun-Ilbo, JoongAng-Ilbo) and two liberal news outlets (Gyeonghyang Newspaper, Hankyoreh), selected because of their influence and ideological partisanship in the media market. Also, to examine the subjectivity of news reports about COVID-19 vaccines, the data collection period ranged from February 26, 2021, the start date of vaccination, to November 1, 2021, the start date of "With-Corona" policy. Using the “KNU Sentiment Lexico”, each message was coded by positive, negative, and neutral scores in word units. The subjectivity was then measured by the frequency of emotional words appearing in each message, and the polarity was derived by summing the scores. Futhermore, the average of the subjectivity and polarity values at the message level was calculated and compared with each other at the message group level. The statistical significance of group differences was verified using the t-test.As a result, it was found that the subjectivity of Twitter status message was higher than that of lead messages in all news reports as well as news reports related to the COVID-19 vaccine, but lower than that of headlines. In the case of sentiment direction, the status message was found to be more negative than headlines and lead messages, which was observed in news reports related to the COVID-19 vaccine as well as other news. In other words, Twitter reports of the press included more negative expressions regardless of the theme. Moreover, the subjectivity of the news reports was differed by the partisanship of the media, and it was found that the status messages of conservative news outlets used more subjective expressions than those of liberal news organizations. When it comes to conservative news organizations, in particular, the subjectivity was higher than that of liberal news organizations in reports related to the COVID-19 vaccine as well as other news. Furthermore, conservative news outlets showed negative sentiments regardless of whether the COVID-19 vaccine was covered or not, but liberal news outlets’ negative sentiment was reduced when they covered the COVID-19 vaccine. The findings provide some implications in that they examined the press coverage of the COVID-19 vaccine issue as well as the impact of social media on journalistic subjectivity. Furthermore, this study suggests that sentiment analysis can be a useful tool in measuring the subjectivity by quantitatively analyzing a large amount of news messages in the social media environment.
