Claude Debussy (1862-1918) is a figure who symbolizes modernism in the Twentieth century Western music. Not only that, he moved French music, which has been treated as a marginalized place by German music since the 18th century, to the center of progress and innovation. The influence and role of symbolist literature was decisive in the formation of Debussy’s musical language. In particular, Paul Verlaine (1844-1896), who wanted to express poetry as music through the rhythmic nuance and sound of language, is regarded as the one who had the most important and lasting effect on Debussy’s music. 《Ariettes Oubliées》, based on Verlaine’s 『Romances sans paroles』, is a work that shows a very original and mature style since Debussy had begun to materialize a new musical expression through symbolist poetry. In this work, the form of poetry is projected in the form of music; the events and images of the text are revealed through specific motives and phrases; and the harmonic language expresses the emotions and psychological state of the speaker. Consequently, it enables new sensual expression outside the framework of traditional form and grammar.
