The purpose of this study is to examine the necessity of Korean orthography education, which aims to improve the writing ability of Korean language students in Chinese universities, and designs Korean orthography education plan that can be applied in Korean language education. This paper examines the significance of Korean orthography education in communication-centered Korean language education, and proposes an education plan to enable Korean language students in Chinese universities to actively use Korean orthography in their notation judgments.
To date, research on Korean orthography has been conducted more with native speakers, and Korean orthography education for foreign learners is still relatively rare. Korean orthography education in the field of Korean language education has been limited to analyzing errors in notation errors of learners, and exploring the causes of errors from the perspective of researchers. These studies have limitations to make learners systematically understand orthography because they fail to describe how learners judge notation. And so far, orthography studies with Chinese learners have been able to show only integrated improvement solutions and does not distinguish the educational targets. Students major in Korean language in Chinese universities expect to have sufficient academic knowledge and expertise as Korean language professionals. However, integrated orthography education method can hardly meet the goals required by students. With this in mind, this study focuses on students major in Korean language in Chinese universities and proposes an educational plan.
The study establishes the status of Korean language grammar education from the perspective of Korean language education, and proposes “Korean orthography education from the view point of grammar knowledge”. By linking Korean grammar knowledge with orthography regulations, this paper shows a practical and feasible solution at the levels of teaching and learning. Accordingly, this paper conducts discussions in following four research directions. Chapter II conducts a preliminary examination of Korean orthography education. First, based on the discussion on prior research, the goals, nature and scope of Korean orthography education for Korean language students are established by synthesizing the characteristics of orthography education for native speakers and those for general Korean language learners. Then, the educational value of the Korean orthography principles is examined, and the status of Korean grammar education is established. Finally, the Korean orthography education is introduced into the Korean grammar education to analyze the connection and discrimination between Korean grammar education and orthography education, and proposes grammatical knowledge related to Korean orthography.
Chapter III examines the current status of Korean orthography education in Chinese Universities and analyzes their requirements. First, the educational background of Korean language students is presented by studying the educational objectives and curriculum of the Korean Language Majors in Chinese Universities. Then, the requirements of orthography education for Korean language students and general Korean language learners are investigated. Significant difference can be found in educational status and requirements of the two groups of learners, and it was possible to classify the individual variables of learners, educational environment, and Korean language teacher variables as variables in the design of orthography education. Considering these variables, it is recommended that the overall direction of Korean orthography education for Korean language students should focus on understanding the principles of orthography.
Chapter IV analyzes the errors and their causes in the notation related to Korean orthography. A questionnaire is drawn to find out the reasons when choosing the notation, and to further understand the notation judgement process of the Korean language students in a Chinese university. In two dimensions of basic principles and specific regulations, the types of errors were subdivided: morphological and phonological errors, morphological and semantic errors, and morphological and syntactic errors. In this frame work, the problems encountered by learners and insufficient grammatical knowledge for notation judgments are analyzed. Then, based on the responses to the questions, a post-interview was conducted , revealing sources of three errors: inter-lingual transfer, intra-lingual transfer, and lack of grammar education in Chinese language education.
Based on the previous discussions, Chapter Ⅴ discusses the goals, contents, and methods of Korean orthography education. First, the overall goal of Korean orthography education is set from a grammatical perspective, and specific goals are set in three areas: morphological-phonological knowledge, morphological-syntactic knowledge, and morphological-semantic knowledge. Then, the educational contents are selected based on the patterns of the notation judgment errors and the analysis of the causes of those errors. Next, a method of Korean orthography education that can be applied in Korean language education site is proposed by combining Korean pronunciation education, grammar item education, and vocabulary education. This paper departs from notation form, and focuses on the process of notation judgement of learners, which has rarely been studied from the perspective of Korean language education before. This study can provide directions on how to implement Korean orthography education, which has not been formally realized in Chinese universities, and thus has further significant implications in terms of proposing plans for orthography education targeting foreign leaners, which has not been realized enough before.
