This study is the first qualitative study on students who majored in the Korean language at Chinese universities and went to Korean graduate schools for master programs after graduation. Through in-depth interviews, this study explores what they experience in Korea, what challenges they face, and how those challenges can be addressed, so as to find ways for improving their adaptation to their life in Korea. To that end, this study asks the following: What experiences and challenges do they face as Korean language majors from Chinese universities studying at Korean graduate schools? How do they cope with the challenges? What are their expectations about their graduate school life in Korea? To answer these questions, the researcher conducted in-depth interviews with 11 students at 10 graduate schools in Seoul who majored in the Korean language in China and graduated from, or are currently studying at, Korean graduate schools as masters or master candidates. The findings of this study can be summarized as follows. This study presents its findings in five categories: the differentiation of Korean language graduates at Chinese universities from ordinary international students; experiences of adapting to graduate school life in Korea; the methods for coping with the challenges arising from the adaptation; and the rewarding aspects of living in Korea as graduate student. As for the first category, Korean language graduates from Chinese universities have three differentiation from ordinary international students: they boast higher proficiency in the Korean language than other international students; they received formal Korean language training before coming to Korea; and they researched about life in Korea before coming to the country. Secondly, as Korean language graduates from Chinese universities, their motivations for studying at Korean graduate schools can be broken down into several categories: the goal of improving their Korean and achieving higher educational attainment; the revitalization of joint programs between Chinese and Korean universities; difficulties faced by university graduates in the Chinese job market; the language environment in Korea; and the interest in majoring in new areas. Thirdly, Korean language graduates from Chinese universities face various academic, socio-cultural, and personal/affective challenges in the course of adapting to their life at Korean graduate schools. Fourthly, Korean language graduates from Chinese universities cope with the challenges by seeking help from people around them, taking time to make up for their shortcomings, and accepting and understanding the characteristics of the Korean society. The interviewees also emphasized the importance of improving their language skills. Fifthly, the rewarding aspects of living in Korea reported by Korean language graduates from Chinese universities included the changes brought on by their life in Korea as graduate students, and the realization of the expectations they had for their life in Korea. This study is significant in that it pursued deep understanding of the life of Korean language graduates from Chinese universities as graduate students in Korea, at least partially fill the gap in previous literature, and proposes advices to students majoring in the Korean language at Chinese universities.
