By virtue of categorization and prototype theories, cognitive semanticists have proposed different models for the polysemy of over since 1980s. However, there has been harsh criticism of the various explanationssince the beginning. To address these problems, this dissertation is dedicated to a usage-based construction of polysemous over and a fine-grained representation of its meaning in use.First, the study proposes a converging perspective based on three binary oppositions: creativity and the naturalness of language, meaning and sense in lexical semantics, and vagueness and ambiguity in polysemy. It further argues for the assumption that the meaning of polysemous over consists of three parts: the structural part, the conceptual part, and the contextual part; and that the gradient of prototypicality within a given sense can be interpreted by way of vagueness, but the fuzzy boundary of two related senses, by way of ambiguity. Second, with corpus data drawn from the BNC (British National Corpus), collocation, colligation, and semantic associations of over are investigated in detail to construct a fine-grained image of categorical prototypicality. Drawing on an analysis of semantic function, productivity, meaning transparency, and idiomaticity, the results manifest a prototypicality gradient for the semantic/usage change of over which can be understood as a continuum ranging from the creativity pole to the naturalness pole, with a complex and inseparable blend of the two effects in between. Third, drawing on an ambiguity analysis and lexico-grammatical evidence based on BNC data, the present study suggests that ‘above-across’, ‘above’, ‘covering’, ‘path’, ‘focus of attention’, and ‘reflexivity’ are basic level usages of over. In addition, a comparative analysis is made between ‘above-across’ and ‘covering’ usages, the result of which reveals that ‘above-across’ over is more typical than ‘covering’ over from the usage-based perspective. Besides, lexico-grammatical evidence also supports a possible connection between the two usages, since ‘covering’ over resembles the ‘horizontally resting on’ association of ‘above-across’ over in both form and meaning. What’s more, more social and psychological meanings are found in the ‘covering’ usage of over than in its ‘above-across’ usage
셋째, 중의성 분석과 BNC 코퍼스 자료를 근거로 한 어휘-문법적 증거를 기반으로 본 논문에서는 ‘above-across’, ‘above’, ‘covering’, ‘path’, ‘focus of attention’, ‘reflexivity’가 over 의 기본적 사용임을 제안한다. 또한 ‘above-across’와 ‘covering’ 사용을 비교 분석하여 사용적 관점에서 ‘above-across’ 뜻을 가진 over 가 ‘covering’ 뜻의over 보다 더 전형적임을 보여준다. 그리고 어휘-문법적 증거를 통해 covering’ over 가 ‘above-across’ over 의 ‘horizontally resting on’ 연상과 유사하기 때문에 두 사용 간의 가능한 연결고리를 찾을 수 있으며, ‘above-across’의 사용에서 보다 over 의 ‘covering’ 사용에서 더 많은 사회적, 심리적 의미를 발견할 수 있다.
