Patterned surfaces are considered as an effective method to control flows in industries for mixing and heat transfer enhancement. They can be applied to enhance heat transfer in ribbed microfluidic channels, to improve the mixing via local flow control in agitating vessel, and to minimize boundary vorticity flux in air foil with textured surface. The main topic of this thesis is effective Navier-slip modelling with numerous theoretical and numerical approach for the interfacial flow of rheologically complex fluids over a corrugated surface. In the first topic, we aim to develop an effective hydrodynamic boundary condition over patterned surfaces for the application to microfluidics. Four different criteria to estimate the effective Navier-slip length and their performance are investigated for flows over corrugated surfaces, such as patterned surfaces or porous interfaces, which can be applied for efficient flow simulations. Four distinctive methods are discussed in the estimation of slip length, namely: mass conservation, balance of energy dissipation rate, force balance, and interfacial slip velocity averaging. Expressions of slip length are derived analytically for each criterion in a pressure-driven flat channel flow and the slip length is determined using a combination of analytic and numerical methods. We report that (i) the slip length from force balance appears to be the most accurate and exactly the same as that from interfacial slip velocity averaging, (ii) the slip length from mass conservation deviates from that of force balance, though minor, particularly for a small relative channel height to the length scale of patterns or pores, and (iii) the energy balance yields significantly different slip lengths. The slip length reduces to a single value for a sufficiently large relative channel height, which indicates that it can be considered as a surface property in general, when the pattern dimension is much smaller than the length scale of flow. In the second topic, we extend the problem in Topic 1 to non-Newtonian fluid flows and show that complex local flow fields, particularly those near corrugated surfaces, can be accurately reproduced with effective Navier-slip boundary condition over an imaginary smooth surface, in which the normalized slip length can be considered as a surface property even for non-Newtonian fluid flows. The expression for the normalized slip length is derived analytically using the effective viscosity and effective shear rate in a pressure-driven channel flow with a corrugated surface, based on the two-parameter model by separating geometrical and rheological factors with the effective viscosity concept. Our framework is established on the combination of the force balance approach for slip length characterization and the flow quantification method based on the energy dissipation rate. Effects of corrugated patterns with various aspect ratios are investigated. For verification, an example stick-slip-stick flow problem is tested and the results are compared with those of direct simulations. We report that the dimensionless normalized slip length appears to be almost constant and independent of flow rate (or pressure drop). This implies that the normalized slip length is nearly independent of rheological properties. In addition, the dimensionless slip length of non-Newtonian fluids is found to be close to that of a Newtonian fluid, and it depends on the flow geometry itself. In the third topic, we derive an approximate analytic solution for the transverse flow of a Newtonian fluid within a narrow gap over/inside unidirectional fibrous porous media. An effective Navier-slip boundary condition is employed such that the flow rate over fluid/porous interface can be reproduced. Based on the lubrication theory, the effective slip length is characterized in a closed form. The dimensionless slip length is found to be a function of flow channel height, fiber volume fractions, and porous architectures, including quadrilateral (Quad), compressed hexagonal (Hex1) and equilateral hexagonal (Hex2) structures. For the macroscopic flow simulation in both fluid and porous regions, the expressions of effective viscosity and the stress jump coefficient in the Stokes-Brinkman model with continuous and jump stress conditions are derived analytically, respectively, to predict the slip velocity and its gradient or stress at the interface. Validations of theoretical results are carried out with comparative numerical simulations. We report that all the characterized expressions (effective slip length, effective viscosity and the stress jump coefficient) can be written as closed form solutions with dimensionless void length, which is determined by the outermost layers for all the three porous architectures (Quad, Hex1 and Hex2). This study may provide an effective theoretical framework with complete expressions for the investigation of pressure-driven flow over fibrous porous media, and also for microfluidic applications such as interfacial slip over lubricant-infused surface (LIS) and automated tape placement (ATP) during the consolidation process. In the fourth topic, we extend the theories in Topic 3 to investigate the effective Navier-slip boundary condition for a narrow channel flow with non-Newtonian fluid inside unidirectional fibrous porous media. The analytical approximation of flow in a power-law fluid is derived based on the lubrication theory. Based on the two-parameter model by decoupling the geometrical and rheological factors with the normalized slip length and effective viscosity concept respectively, an effective Navier-slip boundary condition to replace the fibrous porous media, subjected to the effective slip velocity is applied for a pressure-driven flow in a narrow channel with a power-law fluid. The expression of normalized slip length is derived with the help of the flow rate matching, using the analytical solution of the flow rate for a narrow channel flow over unidirectional fibrous porous media. We report that the expression of normalized slip length is turned out to be a closed form solution, with a function of flow geometry and power-law index. Validations of theoretical results are also implemented. Our investigation may provide a framework for theoretical analyses of effective Navier-slip in non-Newtonian fluid for the microfluidic flows. In the last topic, we characterize the effective Navier-slip with 3D models in a non-Newtonian fluid flows and present that the local fluid dynamics can be accurately reproduced with the effective smooth surface. A two-parameter model used in previous topics is employed and the expression of normalized slip length with the effective viscosity is derived using the force balance approach with the actual packed spheres from direct numerical simulation. Three different porous architectures (simple cubic (SC), face centered cubic (FCC), and body-centered cubic (BCC)) are employed and the effects on normalized slip length are investigated. The normalized slip length is verified by comparing the velocity distributions between the direct simulation with porous media and that with effective slip surface which is characterized by Navier-slip. We report that the even in a 3D model with a non-Newtonian fluid flow, the normalized slip length remains constant with the flow rate and it is still independent of the rheological property. Similar with that in a Newtonian fluid, the normalized slip length is also can be described as a single function of the free surface area for three different porous architectures. In addition, the effective surface with Navier-slip concept is applied on two flow problems in a non-Newtonian fluid flow: stick-slip-stick flow and pipe flow with dimpled surfaces. The slip velocity with the dimpled surfaces is accurately reproduced by the effective surface subjected to the normalized slip length and the effective viscosity.
