The purpose of this study was to examine whether there are any changes in the anxiety, physical self-efficacy, and water safety awareness of elementary school students through participation in survival swimming education, and what relationship exists among several factors affecting said participation. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, 312 elementary school students participating in survival swimming education in Busan were selected by convenience sampling. Excluding 12 students determined to be unfaithful respondence, 300 students were used as the final valid samples. Using the SPSS 25.0 statistics program, exploratory factor analysis and reliability analysis were used to check the validity and reliability of the questionnaire. Paired samples t-test and two-way repeated measures ANOVA were used to find out the elementary school students' underwater anxiety, physical self-efficacy, and water safety awareness before and after participation, as well as according to demographic characteristics and the group-time interaction effect. A multiple regression analysis was used to verify the impact relationship between variables. The results were as follows. First, in comparing responses before and after participation in survival swimming education, elementary school students showed a significant decrease in underwater anxiety and a significant increase in physical self-efficacy and awareness of water safety. Second, there were some significant differences in underwater anxiety, physical self-efficacy, and water safety consciousness according to demographic characteristics, and group-time interaction effects were partially observed in all variables. Third, underwater anxiety among elementary school students participating in survival swimming education was found to have a partially negative effect on physical self-efficacy and water safety awareness, and physical self-efficacy was found to have a positive effect on water safety awareness. The analysis of these results confirm the effectiveness of survival swimming education, and thus a reconsideration of the direction of qualitative expansion of the program is warranted.Key words: survival swimming education, underwater anxiety, physical self-efficacy, water safety awareness
