Although many scholars have studied the factors influencing the internationalization of family enterprises from different perspectives, there are few studies on how family chief executive officers (CEOs) directly influence business internationalization strategies. Based on the theory of Socioemotional wealth (SEW) and resource-based theory, this paper explores the relationship between family CEOs and internationalization. The moderating effect of the CEO's international experience and political connections on family CEOs and internationalization was also examined. Examining Chinese registered family firms during the period of 2013 to 2017, this paper uses the fixed effect model to analyze the collected data. The main conclusions are as follows: First, family CEOs have a negative relationship to the degree of internationalization. Second, when a family CEO has an overseas study experience or overseas political ties, the negative relationship between the family CEO and the degree of internationalization is weakened. The result complements the research of family involvement in management and internationalization, and also has implications for the management structure of family businesses.
