This paper is an analytical study of the orientalistic elements revealed inside the opera and of Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924). Originating from Western curiosity toward the East, Orientalism was at first a term referring to the Oriental elements manifested in Western culture or art, but gradually became a means of reproducing distorted stereotypes toward the East and Western supremacy, linking it to the dichotomous division of Western colonialism and imperialism, and the attitude of allocating unequal values to its classification. The 19th century was a time when Eastern culture and art began to be introduced to the West as the development of mobile technology enabled exchanges with the East, and for Europeans who were thirsty for so-called " exotic things", Eastern arts and objects inspired their desire to consume. Puccini's operas and are representative products of this 19th-century Orientalism, each using Japan and China as the background of their works. But given the critical view of Orientalism, there is room for reconsideration as to whether the East, which is being reproduced in both works, exists as “a subject of it self” or remains solely in the Western fantasy of the East. However, it is clear that the background of Puccini's reputations as the best composer of Italy since Giuseppe Verdi does not just rely upon the audience’s favor gained solely by exotic elements. His operas reveal traces of the Verismo movement full of humaistic attitude, while musically capturing the sophistication that does not miss the flow of 19th-century romanticism. Therefore, in this study, we first considered the theoretical background of Orientalism, Verismo Opera, and 19th-century romanticism in order to gain a multifaceted approach to Puccini and his two operas, Madama Butterfly and Turandot. In addition, considering the characteristics of opera as a comprehensive art encompassing play, script, music, and stage production, not only traditional factors shown in both operas were analyzed but also orientalism reproduced in visible aspects such as in script, costume, and stage production was sufficiently considered.
