리하르트 슈트라우스(Richard Strauss. 1864~1949)는 19세기 말에서 20세기 초에 걸쳐 활동한 작곡가로서 150여 곡의 가곡을 남긴 근대 독일 가곡의 대표적인 작곡가로 손꼽힌다. 그는 관현악 반주로 된 가곡 발전에 큰 공헌을 이루었으며 또한 근대적 기법으로 새로운 감각의 곡을 작곡하였다.본 논문은 후기 낭만이라는 과도기적인 시대적 특성과 그 특성을 작품에 잘 나타낸 슈트라우스를 시대와 그의 가곡을 연관 지어 알아보았으며 Op. 27 ‘Vier Lider’ 네 개의 가곡을 통해 슈트라우스의 전반적인 음악의 특징을 알아보았다.이 곡들은 무엇보다도 결혼식 날 그의 부인에게 헌정되었던 곡들로 이 곡들은 기존 독일 예술가곡이 가진 간결미 속에서 전보다도 언어(가사)의 개념을 더욱 강조한 서정적인 선율을 사용하여 독특한 선율미를 보이고 있다.이 시기에 슈트라우스의 가곡의 명작이 이 무렵에 나오기 시작하였다.슈트라우스는 가곡에 있어 단순한 전음계적 선율에 애착을 가졌으며 화성에 있어서는 단순한 주요 3화음의 분산 화음적 배치를 쓰거나 변화 화음을 사용하여 후기 낭만과 음악에 있어 표현의 극대화를 이루었다고 볼 수 있다. 또한, 슈트라우스는 서정적인 멜로디에 화려하고 강한 반주를 융합시킴으로 후기 낭만과의 가장 뛰어난 가곡 작곡가로서 평가되고 있다.
Richard Strauss (1864-1949) is a composer who has worked from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century and is considered one of the leading composers of modern German songs that have left more than 150 songs. He has made great contributions to the development of orchestral musicand also composed new sensations with modern techniques.This paper identified the transitional period characteristic of late romanticism and Strauss, who is well represented in his work, as a relation between the times and his songs. The four songs of Op. 27 ‘Vier Lider’ reveal the characteristics of Strauss’s overall music. The songs, among other things, were dedicated to his wife on the day of the wedding, and they have a unique melody using lyrical melodies that emphasize the concept of language (Lyrics) more than ever before in the simplicity of the existing German artist.Around this time, a masterpiece of Strauss’s lyric began to appear. Strauss was attached to simple phonetic melodies in the tune, and when it comes to harmony, he used a simple distributed chord arrangement of three major chords or a change chord to maximize expression in post-romances and music.Also, Strauss is regarded as the most accomplished composer of tunes with post-romance, fusing colorful and strong accompaniment with lyrical melodies
