본 연구의 목적은 미혼 남녀의 정서지능과 이성교제 만족도 간의 관계에서 갈등대처방식의 매개효과를 검증하는 것이었다. 본 연구의 조사대상은 중국 호남성에 거주하는 현재 이성과 교제 중인 미혼 남녀 354명이었다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같이 제시하였다. 첫째, 조사대상자의 정서지능 및 그의 하위변인 자기정서인식, 타인정서인식, 정서활용, 정서조절 순으로 모두 보통 이상 수준으로 나타났다. 남성의 전반적인 정서적 능력은 여성보다 높았다. 이성교제에서 갈등을 겪을 때 가장 많이 사용하는 대처방식은 협상이었고, 그 다음으로 회피, 수용, 단절 방식이었다. 남성이 수용 대처방식을 더 많이 사용하는 반면, 여성이 회피와 단절 대처방식을 더 많이 사용하는 것으로 보였다. 또한, 조사대상자의 전반적 이성교제 만족도는 보통 수준보다 높았고, 남성의 이성교제 만족도가 여성보다 높았다. 둘째, 대상자의 인구사회학적 특성과 이성교제 특성에 따라 이성교제 만족도에 차이가 있는지 살펴본 결과, 연령, 학력, 이성교제 횟수, 교제기간, 데이트 빈도, 결혼 고려 여부에서 집단 간 유의미한 차이가 나타났다. 셋째, 남성의 이성교제 만족도는 결혼 고려, 정서지능, 갈등대처방식의 하위변인 협상, 수용과 정적 상관이 나타났고, 갈등빈도, 갈등대처방식의 하위변인 회피, 단절과 부적 상관이 나타났다. 여성의 이성교제 만족도는 학력, 교제기간, 데이트 빈도, 같은 지역, 결혼 고려, 정서지능, 갈등대처방식 하위요인 협상과 정적 상관을 보였고, 이성교제 횟수, 갈등대처방식의 하위변인 회피, 단절과 부적 상관을 보였다. 넷째, 조사대상자의 일반적 특성, 정서지능, 갈등대처방식이 이성교제 만족도에 미치는 영향을 알아본 결과, 남성인의 경우, 결혼 고려, 타인정서인식과 수용은 이성교제 만족도에 유의한 정적 영향을 미쳤으며, 단절은 이성교제 만족도에 유의한 부적 영향을 미쳤다. 여성인의 경우, 학력, 데이트 빈도, 결혼 고려, 자기정서인식과 정서활용은 이성교제 만족도에 유의한 정적 영향을 미쳤으며, 단절은 이성교제 만족도에 유의한 부적 영향을 미쳤다. 다섯째, 정서지능과 이성교제 만족도의 관계에서 갈등대처방식의 매개효과를 검증한 결과가 성별에 따라 다른 양상을 보였다. 남성의 경우, 갈등대처방식 수용, 회피, 단절은 정서지능과 이성교제 만족도의 관계에서 유의한 매개효과가 나타났다. 여성의 경우, 갈등대처방식 협상, 회피는 정서지능과 이성교제 만족도의 관계에서 유의한 매개효과가 나타났다. 요약하자면 갈등대처방식은 정서지능과 이성교제 만족도의 관계에서 매개역할을 하였으나 성별에 따라 결과가 달랐다. 따라서 미혼 남녀의 이성교제 만족도를 높이기 위해 정서적 능력을 강조할 필요가 있을 것이다. 또한, 성별의 특성에 맞는 갈등대처방식의 교육이 필요하다고 볼 수 있다.
Present Study was aimed at testing the mediating effect of responses to conflict on the relationship between emotional intelligence and dating relationship satisfaction in unmarried men and women. There were 354 unmarried men and women who are in dating were recruited from Hunan Province, China. Results are summarized as follow. First, the level of emotional intelligence and its sub-factors: self-emotions appraisal, other-emotions appraisal, use of emotion, and regulation of emotion of this sample were over average. Men’s overall emotional intelligence was higher than women’s. Voice was the most used response to dating conflict, neglect, loyalty and exit were the following responses. Loyalty was more used in men than women but neglect and exit were more used in women. The overall dating relationship satisfaction were over average and men’s dating relationship satisfaction were higher than women’s. Second, result showed that there were significant differences in dating relationship satisfaction depending on age, educational background, number of relationships, dating frequency, and marital considerations. Third, men’s dating relationship satisfaction was correlated positively with marital considerations, emotional intelligence, voice and loyalty, and negatively with conflict frequency, neglect and exit. Women’s dating relationship satisfaction was correlated positively with educational background, period of dating, dating frequency, same area, marital considerations, emotional intelligence and voice, and negatively with number of relationships, neglect and exit. Fourth, the results of the effect of demographic factors, emotional intelligence and responses to conflict on dating relationship satisfaction were as follow: in case of a man, marital considerations, other-emotions appraisal and loyalty had a positive influence, and exit had a negative influence on dating relationship satisfaction; in case of a woman, educational background, dating frequency, marital considerations, self-emotions appraisal and use of emotion affect dating relationship satisfaction positively, and number of relationships, neglect and exit affect negatively. Fifth, results of the mediating effect of responses to conflict on the relationship between emotional intelligence and dating relationship satisfaction were different depending on gender. In detail, in case of a man, loyalty, neglect and exit played a mediating effect on this relationship; in case of a woman, voice and neglect played a mediating effect on this relationship. To sum up, responses to conflict did paly a significant role, a mediating effect, on the relationship between emotional intelligence and dating relationship satisfaction. However, the effect works differently depending on gender. Therefore, it’s necessary to emphasize emotional intelligence and gender-specific education for unmarried men and women in dating.
